7 Awesome Travel Hacks to Get Through Security Faster.

Here are seven of my favorite road warrior secrets to help you get through security faster.

Even if you love to travel, the thought of unloading all your stuff and schlepping through TSA security checkpoints is enough to make you dread traveling. So here are my tips to get through security faster.

I fly a lot for business (and pleasure!) and have learned some handy tricks to help you speed through the security checkpoints. Here are a few tips I’ve learned to get your through security faster and make your time at the TSA line a little less painful.

    1. Enroll in TSA Precheck. Even if you don’t fly that often, enrolling in TSA precheck is well worth the money. At this writing, the fee is $80 for 4 years (which breaks down to $20 per year. A bargain in my book to be able to travel with your shoes on.) Yep, you get to keep your shoes on,TSA precheck means you get to keep your shoes on, keep your light jacket on, and only take liquids and a laptop out of your bag. Go to the TSA precheck website to find a location to enroll. You’ll find a list there of the documents you’ll need to bring with you to prove identity. The appointment is fast and easy. They’ll check your documents, take your fingerprints and you’re done. You’ll get your Known Traveler number via email in 7-10 days.
    1. If you fly out of a major metro area airport, enroll in Clear. Clear is more expensive ($179 a year) but Clear lets you check in with your fingerprints or retinal scan and then go to the FRONT of the security line (either TSA or TSA precheck). If you do get Clear, make sure you’re also enrolled in TSA precheck, otherwise, you’ll be put at the front of regular security check.  You can sign up online at Clear. I had my appointment at the Clear area in the LAX airport.  Once enrolled, all you have to do is head to the Clear kiosk. The signup is instantly added to the system.
    1. Put your belt and jewelry in your carryon. It’s so frustrating to get dressed to go the airport to only have to get undressed for security. Save the hassle and pack your belt, necklaces, metal jewelry into your carryon and put them on once you are past the security checkpoint.
    1. Carry a briefcase or backpack with compartments so you can easily remove your laptop. I splurged on a Tumi Business Tote and I love the divided compartments. It’s got a really rugged construction and has already made lots of international and domestic business trips.
    1. Have a specific bag for your liquids. I love this zippered quart-sized plastic bag for carry-on sized liquids. It’s super durable and makes packing my liquids easy.
    1. Give yourself extra time. I used to be that person who barely made it to the gate on time. Not anymore. I allow myself extra time for every flight. I give myself at least 90 minutes for domestic flights. I’d rather have 30 minutes extra waiting at the boarding gate than getting anxious in a long security line, afraid I’ll miss my flight.
  1. Bring a sense of humor. We’re all in this same line together. Carry your sense of humor and the line won’t be quite as painful, no matter how long the wait.

  • Thanks for these awesome hacks for a more enjoyable travel ahead. I love it that you said we have to bring our sense or humor no matter how long the lane is. Thanks again for sharing!

  • The most frustrating part of being in line behind someone who is not prepared is all the jewelry, belts and knickknacks they have. That's a great point by putting it all away until after security. Thanks for sharing!

  • I usually jump behind the lines with more business travelers, it usually goes faster because they know how to get through security. I avoid lines with elderly, families, and kids.

  • Great tips! Be aware of what you need to remove from your case and what you’re not allowed.
