3 Reasons Going Vegan Over 40 Will Make you Healthier & Happier too!

Are you toying with the idea of going vegan over 40?

Maybe you tried Veganuary and so you’re thinking about taking the plunge and going vegan for good. Well, I’m here to tell you that you need to GO FOR IT. There are a TONS of reasons that following a plant-based diet makes you healthier and happier.

(By the way, I’m not a doctor nor have I played one on TV, so for medical advice, ask your doctor.) I’m not dispensing medical advice. I’m sharing the amazing benefits I’m discovered by adopting a plant-based vegan diet and why a vegan diet would work for you too.

1. Big, no huge, health benefits.

No surprise here. Vegans, on average, weigh 20 pounds less than non-vegans. Vegans are less likely to develop cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Now that I’m over 50, these health benefits are even more exciting that fitting into my favorite skinny jeans, although that is nice. (You can read my battle with a pair of one size too small skinny jeans here.)

Plus, I’ve also noticed my skin seems softer and clearer since going vegan. And those winter sinus infections are gone.  I used to get sinus infections each fall or winter but since going vegan, my sinus infections have disappeared.

2. Shake It Up.

Going vegan has given my life a jolt.  Going vegan has opened my world to new foods, new places-new people. You might say vegan and plant based eating is a new passionate hobby. I’ve learned new dishes to cook. Who knew dried figs were so damn yummy. And roasted brussel sprouts? Yum. Try out this fast and easy vegan brussel sprout recipe.

Now when I travel I download the Happy Cow app (a must for traveling while vegan!) and find new restaurants. Who knew there are vegan restaurants in Seoul and even in meat loving Madrid. And vegan soul food good enough to make you cry at Evolve Restaurant in Washington, D.C.

Being vegan has opened up new world.  New restaurants, new foods (food festivals, wine festivals) and yes, even some new friends I’ve met and connected with over veganness. It’s a welcoming world of happy plant eaters across the world. Join us.

2. Making a Difference in the World.

The world is kinda crazy right now. Actually, let’s be honest, these days the news of violence, war, hatred-it’s enough to make you feel hopeless, powerless. What can I do?

No, I can’t stop the ice caps from melting. I can’t bring peace to the Middle East. But I can change the world each time I sit down for a meal (or as I tend to do, stand over the kitchen island with the fridge door open). With each bite, I’m choosing compassion. With each meal, I’m choosing to help animals, the environment, and my own body and health. It’s just a tiny piece, but at the end of each day, I know I’ve done my part to make this planet a more compassionate place.

And I can fit in my skinny jeans. A true win, win.

Have you tried a plant-based diet yet? And if you’re vegan, what’s your favorite plant based yumminess? Do tell!
