Divorced mom the anti-boring life list you need to make, and get rocking on with your life.
It’s Friday night in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the planet and I’m cleaning lint out of my dryer. Miley Cyrus is probably less than half a mile away twerking herself silly. I can see Universal Studios (not Alaska) from my house.
I’m eating a dinner of frozen peas and scrambled eggs and wondering what explosion of fun is next on my agenda. Maybe I’ll pluck my eyebrows. Or maybe I’ll become one with the couch and troll Facebook until I fall asleep with my laptop again.
How is it that I have no plans in LA on a busy Friday night?
Am I just over 40 and incredibly boring? I think it’s because I’m a sucky social planner.
There are so many events in LA, I get overwhelmed. And each week Friday pops out of the calendar like a scary wind up Jack in the Box toy. Surprise! (I can’t explain this since Friday does happen every single week right after the day they call Thursday.)
This wasn’t the shiny new life I envisioned. I think I learned some bad habits. When you’re married, you have an event planning co-pilot. An automatic movie partner. Someone to try a new restaurant with.
After nearly 20 years, I got used to the backup plan that maybe my husband would suggest something and I’d be freed from figuring something out on my own.
But here’s the tough truth. I’m separated so making plans for my own life is now solely my responsibility. That goes from Friday nights to financial planning, emotional development, and fixing the toilet. I have to transform my frozen pea eating Friday night slacker self alone. Damn it.
So I’m making an I’m Bored List. A list of things I want to try, places I want to go. A ready made list of ideas to try when I’m feeling bored and uninspired. Nothing major. Nothing crazy expensive. Just a few steps outside of my comfort zone.
Here’s my anti-boring life list so far
I’ll try one on Friday night when I don’t have plans. What’s on your I’m Bored list? I’d love to hear what little things you want to do to spice up your life.
Get your list ready because Friday will come around again next week, I promise.
I can help you with Pilates and vegan place – GIRL DATE!
I’d totally dig that! I need a girl date sister!!
Girl dates sound like a lot of fun! But wat do u do wen u were practically locked away for the past 5 yrs & lost contact w/everyone? Now that I have all this freedom & not being timed every time I leave the house, I feel kinda lost! It sounds dumb i know!
It doesn’t sound dumb at all. We give up so much it seems! It’s almost like starting all over again. I lost touch with so many of my girlfriends and am trying to rebuild those relationships. I’ve reached out to friends I’ve lost touch with to get together again. (Everyone gets so busy with family and kids too). I’ve met some moms through volunteering at my daughter’s school and have started to foster some friendships there. Have you reached out to any of your old friends?
