Divorce 101: Why Fridays Suck When You’re Separated.
Here’s a little Separation and Divorce 101 info you might want to know. When you are divorced, Fridays are the suckiest day of the week by far. I know, everyone loves to hate Mondays. Back to work, back to school, and all that stuff. But since I’m separated, I’ve come to truly despise Friday and here’s why.
1. Friday is the gateway to the weekend. People ask what your weekend plans are. I’m separated, I have no clue what to do. I feel pressured to have some amazing event planned. Foreign film festival? Skydiving? Lecture series on medieval art? I can’t handle the stress of planning a whole two days of activities, I’m tired. Can’t I just clean out the litter box, brave a trip to Trader Joe’s, nap on the couch and call that a full weekend?
2. Legal paperwork often gets delivered on Friday. Attorneys love to f&ck up your weekend by sending a huge pile of divorce documents on Friday afternoon. Or they’ll send you an email “update” full of bad news or their invoice. They make sure you will spend your weekend weeping or screaming.
3. Too Much Time. If you split custody with your Ex, you’ll have entire days or weekends without your children. I know that sounds awesome, but remember that for years your weekends were nothing but soccer games, pancake breakfasts and school projects. You didn’t have to plan anything, the kids schedule ruled. Now, you’d pay cash money for a school fundraiser or an argument about hygiene. There’s nothing but crickets. Big gaping silence. All that time sprawls out before me and makes me nervous. Two entire days alone. I have to plan activities to fill the time but I suck at decision making and planning. Do I prowl the sale rack at Target for a $4 shirt? Do I call a friend and hope I don’t sound pathetic? Do I workout? Or do I simply curl up in the fetal position on the bedroom carpet and drool slightly. Decisions. Decisions.
In short, if you call me this weekend, don’t be surprised if I’m hiding and unable to answer your call. I’m just waiting for Monday to start again so that I have some sweet relief from all this sucky free time.
