It’s a huge treat when you can turn to TV and find a series that you connect with. Characters who reflect back your own zany life. Stories that show women with sass and intelligence weathering the storms of life and thriving anyway.
A TV show that makes you laugh at the craziness around you. A show that makes you think “I thought I was the only one with a family that insane!”
No surprise then since my divorce, I’ve loved TV shows about divorce and the crazy highs and unexpected lows that come with rebuilding your life.
The past two years has seen several can’t miss series set in the divorce world. (And these series have amazing cast and writers too.)
Some of my favorites:
Grace and Frankie
Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as friends blindsided when their husbands of thirty years leave them for each other. Lily Tomlin just scored an Emmy nomination for her role. The second season debuts on Netflix sometime in 2016.
Younger
From producer Darren Starr of Sex and the City. Tony Award winner Sutton Foster is Liza, a forty something divorce mom who pretends to be in her 20’s to land an entry level publishing job and start her life over again. Hilary Duff and Debie Mazar plus hunky Nick Tortorella are her best friends and hunky new boyfriend. Season 2 debuts on TV Land January 13, 2016.
Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce
On this Bravo series now in its second season, Lisa Edelstein plays Abby, a self help and relationship advice author, trying to navigate her newly single life with the help of her girlfriends.
But wait. 2016 welcomes even more shows all about the big ol’ D to the small screen. Here are some of the highlights.
Sarah Jessica Parker/HBO Series Divorce
Sarah Jessica Parker stars in Divorce a new series on HBO about Frances, a woman going through a long drawn out divorce and realized that rebuilding her life is harder than she imagined. (OK, can I consult on this project? I can so relate.)
Here’s an article from The Hollywood Reporter with the details.
Reese Witherspoon/ABC Divorce Drama, Please Don’t Go
The drama follows a high powered Dallas divorce attorney who made it out of a Texas trailer park to the mansions of Dallas only to be undone by her destructive tendencies and secrets from her past.
Here’s an article from The Hollywood Reporter about the ABC drama.
Nicholas Spark/ABC Comedy, The Next Chapter
The Second Chapter is a comedy about a famous romance writer who gets a divorce, and the way this life event makes him question his entire belief in life and love. (Seems a wee bit autobiographical to me since Sparks divorced his wife of 25 years in January.) Hollywood Reporter article about Sparks’ divorce comedy.
Shonda Rhimes/ABC Comedy, Splittsville
A comedy from producer Shonda Rhimes about a group of newly single moms all fresh from their respective divorces who band together to raise their kids and rebuild their lives. Hollywood Reporter article on Splittsville.
Why the sudden wave of TV shows about divorce?
Maybe it’s the one type of family still not portrayed on television.
But I think maybe it’s just our time. There are finally a generation of women in power in television and digital networks. There is finally a small group of female executives, writers, stars and producers who can create and give voice to this journey that so many women find themselves in. Over 40 and facing divorce? Maybe we’re the new awesome.
Whatever the reason, I cannot wait to add these new TV show about divorce to my binge watching list. I’m stocking up on Pinot Grigio and popcorn.
