3 Non toxic nail polish brands to try now. A healthier way to polish your nails.
I’ve been trying to live a little bit healthier each day and lessen my exposure to unnecessary chemicals whenever possible (and frankly when it’s easy). I started thinking about my nail polish.
What’s in those pretty little nail polish bottles anyway? I actually went online to see what’s hiding in those colorful little bottles and was pretty horrified. There are some scary chemicals in nail color.
Most nail polishes on the market are full of strange sounding chemicals, including what is called the “toxic trio”; formaldehyde, dbp, and toluene. Here’s an article from the New York Times on some of the chemicals found in most nail polish.
What are they?
Formaldehyde is listed as a human carcinogen and causes allergic reactions, DBP (dibutyl phthalate) can trigger asthma and has been linked to reproductive and developmental effects and cancer in lab animals, and toluene is a a solvent that’s also found in gasoline (yikes!).
I don’t know about you but I’d prefer not to put all those nasty chemicals on my nails and my body if I don’t have to. I’ve found that you don’t have to sacrifice style for a healthier polish. There are nail polish brands that are long lasting, have lots of great on trend colors and contain fewer chemicals.
These brands (listed below) are free of the “toxic trio” chemicals. All are about the same price as the name brand polishes you’d find in your local drugstore.
Here are three non toxic nail polish brands I really like.
1. Pacifica Nail Polish is free of seven chemicals normally found in nail polish.
It doesn’t contain parabens, phthalates (dibutyl phthalate), toluene, xylene, camphor, formaldehyde, resin, and any animal by products. It’s vegan, 100% cruelty free.
It comes in 25 fun colors. The color I’m wearing is Turquoise Tiara. Another great Pacifica color is Red Red Wine, a deep classic burgundy red.
2. Mineral Fusion Nail Polish comes in an amazing 61 colors and 3 finishes.
Their metallic finishes are vibrant and apply easily. Mineral Fusion is formaldehyde, dbp, camphor, toluene free and vegan. I chose Grotto, a denim blue with a cool metallic finish.
I also use the Mineral Fusion nail polish remover. It is acetone free, and doesn’t have that crazy strong nail polish remover smell. It removed my old polish easily with just one swipe and didn’t leave my nails feeling completely stripped.
3. Gabriel Nail Color comes in 18 colors, is free of formaldhyde, DBP, toluene, camphor or phthalate.
It’s not tested on animals and vegan too. I love the Vibrant Orchid, a great shade that’s somewhere between purple and pink and seems really on trend right now. They have a great neutral shade called Cashmere, pink with a hint of brown.
Give these non toxic nail polishes a try. You can be healthier and stylish at the same time.
